For Heart Health's
Delight
Improved Cholesterol:
Studies have shown that incorporating flax into your daily diet can reduce your
total cholesterol, including the LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides as the
soluble fiber in flax can bind the cholesterol and prevent it from being
absorbed. Flax may also help reduce clotting time which can reduce the
risk of heart attacks and strokes. Incorporating shelled flax into your
daily diet may therefore help keep your arteries clear and protect against
arrhythmias.
Of course, eating foods lower in fat, exercising more and limiting your sugar
and salt consumption doesn't hurt either!
Lower Blood Pressure:
Daily consumption of flax can
have a positive effect on managing high blood pressure. The
Omega-3
essential fatty acids in flax have proven to lower the blood pressure in
patients suffering from high blood pressure. Note however that those
suffering from low blood pressure should monitor their
Omega-3
intake carefully.
Help Fight Diabetes:
Adding flax into your daily
diet to help fight diabetes is a recommendation of many dietitians including
Sylvie Jacques, Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator of the Bruyère
Academic Family Health Team of Ottawa, who states 'I encourage people to
eat more flaxseed for a good source of fiber, especially soluble fiber, and to
decrease triglycerides in the blood, decrease the risk of blood clots and
decrease the absorption of dietary cholesterol. Flax is also convenient,
palatable and easy to add to recipes as well as being appropriate for
vegetarians'. Shelled flax
may be
especially effective in this treatment as both the outer shell (containing
dietary fiber and lignans) and the inner kernel (containing Alpha Linolenic
Acid) are key in the treatment and prevention of this disease. As flax is
a very low glycemic index food, adding it to your meals may help moderate the
increase in blood sugar instead of having a high blood sugar increase after the
meal. In one
study, participants who consumed bread made from milled flaxseed had a blood
glucose response 28% lower compared to those who had white bread. Of
course, more research is needed and this is being recognized by the University
of Manitoba. A study is currently being conducted to evaluate the effects
of flaxseed on blood glucose and insulin levels in patients with type 2
diabetes.
Help Protect Against Cancer:
Flax contains up to 800 times
more plant lignans as compared to other vegetarian foods. Lignans are
phytoestrogens, which are antioxidants that may help protect against
certain cancers, particularly breast and colon cancer. Research suggests
that flax lignans may be capable of blocking the action of certain substances
that can contribute to the formation of cancerous tumors. The Alpha
Linolenic Acid (ALA) in flax is also proving to be an effective cancer-fighting
component. Research also suggests that the high fiber in
flaxseed may reduce your risk of colon and prostate cancer.
Help
Build Up Your Immune System:
We are all susceptible to those
colds and flus that seem to get passed around every year. Let's face it,
you can only wash your hands so many times in a day! Building up your
immune system from the inside is an effective way of keeping those germs at bay!
Research has found that eating flax daily may help the body to better defend
itself again viruses and bacteria as it promotes cell growth. The
Omega-3
in shelled flax can therefore
play an important role in strengthening your immune system.
For Better Digestive Health:
The insoluble fiber in flax can improve regularity. This fiber absorbs
water which allows the body's waste to pass more easily through the colon and
thereby prevent constipation. When increasing the fiber content in your
diet it is important to also increase your fluid intake for this balance to be
effective. You should therefore try to drink the recommended 8 glasses of
water a day, and of course, make sure you eat your fruits and vegetables too!
Recent studies have also indicated that the
Omega-3 in flax may benefit those
suffering from Crohn's disease and colitis, as the EFA's may help heal the inner
lining of the inflamed intestines.
Reduce Symptoms of Menopause:
For years, women have eaten flax
daily to help with the hot flashes associated with menopause. In a
new study, it was found that eating flaxseed daily for six weeks cut the number
and severity of daily hot flashes in half! The natural plant estrogen-like
substance, called "phytoestrogen", acts as a natural hormone therapy and helps to
stabilize hormone levels which in turn, helps reduce the symptoms of menopause.
This shouldn't be surprising - after all flax is Mother Nature's gift to us and
she is a woman!
Help Combat Mood Disorders and ADHD:
Eating flax daily can help alleviate depression and the mood swings associated
with PSM and menopause even in severely depressed woman. Research
suggests that the
Omega-3 fatty acids in flax are effective in treating
depressive illnesses as well as hyperactivity in children as researchers have
found that people with a diet which is low in
Omega-3 are more likely to suffer
mood disorders. There is a plausible link between the high rates of
depression and bipolar and the low intake of
Omega-3. Studies have also
shown that nursing mothers who had lower levels of
Omega-3
in their breast milk
were more likely to suffer from postnatal depression. Another study
indicated that regular intake of
Omega-3 together with evening primrose oil
reduced hyperactivity, restlessness and impulsive behaviour and improved the
attention span of children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD).
For Brain Development and the Treatment of
Alzheimers:
Studies indicate that increased
Omega-3
may help with brain development, concentration and learning ability as well as
memory function. This is especially important for young children as well
as those suffering from Alzheimer's.
Alleviate Inflammation (Help
Arthritis):
Some health professionals are recommending that people suffering from rheumatoid
arthritis increase their
Omega-3
intake to help ease arthritic
pain and joint swelling. Current research indicates that
Omega-3
essential fatty acids can help slow cartilage breakdown which results in painful
and often disabling arthritis. As

Is Flax the Cure for Everything?
It would appear so! There are even reports that eating flax
daily can prevent blindness, baldness and increase sexual libido! The fact
is that no one food can cure all the diseases of the world. Your overall
diet, together with your lifestyle (exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption,
etc.) and your genetic make-up play key roles in your general health and well
being. However the current and ongoing studies above do indicate that people of all ages and
lifestyles have benefited from eating flax daily. Flaxseed has been a part
of the human diet for over 1,000 years!
